By creating a structure that blends in with the current Granville Island style, the exterior will not “go out of style” like a fashion trend.
It will be somewhat a classic exterior, indicating that this school and its programs are a permanent fixture within society and culture, and yet it stands out from the surrounding area, implying that it is non-conforming.
The interior of the structure will contain non-permanent architecture to allow for flexibility of space as time progresses. The only limitations will exist in 'zones'.
If you click on the list of different floors of the diagrams, you will see how the space is allocated.
The building has a aesthetically pleasing top-view because we noticed that most of Granville Island is visible from above by the city.
The alley will host incubator companies, class projects, and research. These showcases will change on a regular basis to make sure that the public has something new to see every time they come.
The front wall is made of concrete and rather plain. Our attempt to 'spice-it-up' will be to add a projector that creates light designs on the front of the building during darker days. We also though that on rather brigth days when the projection might not be viewable, we could provide chalk for passerbys to decorate at will.
The trusses of the original building are part of the design and will be shown off.
