Upper Greyhawk

BENETEAU FIRST 435E

Specifications:

Name: Upper Greyhawk. An ocean going, sloop-rigged sailing yacht.  This is a Canadian federally-registered yacht.  Canadian GST and import duties have been paid.

Model: Beneteau First 435E, hull #340. Built in France in 1985. The "E" designates the upgraded model that is distinguished by its larger sail area, three-spreader rig, deeper keel, increased ballast and teak interior detail. The boat is beautiful, fast and safe.

Designer: German Frers. The "First" series was designed as an ocean going racer/ cruiser. The design principals are detailed in the popular book "The Worlds Best Sailboats" (pages 43-53).

Accommodation:

Greyhawk has a large, two-cabin layout, ideal for cruising with family and friends or long-term offshore cruising. The large V-berth forward sleeps two comfortably, connected to a head, sink and shower. Aft to port is a U-shaped dinette, large enough to seat 8 comfortably. The dinette can also be converted to sleep two.   A single pilot berth fits along the port side behind the dinette. A settee on starboard will also convert to a single berth. Midships, also to starboard, are teak bookshelves and cupboards.

Further aft is the L-shaped galley complete with Force 10, 3-burner propane stove and oven. The oven is large enough to bake bread. An extremely large, two-compartment refrigerator with icebox (Adler Barbour) is contained under the galley counter.  Double sinks and large counter top area look forward. There are ample cupboards to port, along with slideout pantry drawers and utensil drawer.

A beautiful navigation station with large chart table is located to starboard. All ship's systems and navigation electronics are described below. Storage cupboards for supplies and mechanical are also incorporated along the starboard side. The vessel's layout is superb because both the galley and navigation area are located out of the main traffic flow.

The master accommodation is located in the rear. Two double cabins were professionally converted into a King-size berth. Closet space was also significantly increased.   Cabin doors close this area off for privacy and comfort. The aft head has been upgraded with improved shower arrangements.

Cabin Heating and Ventilation:

A diesel-fired Espar heater located in the rear lazarette provides forced air heating. Hot air is fanned through 3 vents located throughout the cabin.  The thermostat for the heater is located at the navigation station. The heater has been more than adequate in below zero temperatures. Fresh air ventilation is available through two large opening roof hatches and 7 opening portholes.

Navigation Equipment:

Brooks and Gatehouse Hercules 290 system provides;

-         Speed, depth, distance, true wind speed, apparent wind speed, wind angle, battery voltage, reaching performance, tracking performance, change in velocity made good and timer.

-         B&G Halcyon-2, electronic compass in located in the forward locker and reads out in the naviguation station and on deck.

-         A master display unit and depth display with alarm settings is available at the navigation station.

-         3 multiple display units are at the cockpit along with analog wind direction and magnified wind indicators.

-         All systems working perfectly

Magnavox (Leica) GPS MX 2000; with fast acquiring antenna, large screen with countless tracking and coarse setting options.

Cetrek 727 autopilot, heavy duty quadrant mounted rack drive with rudder reference, controls and data display units at the navigation station and cockpit, a hand held remote control allows operation anywhere on or below deck.  Ships course can be directed by the separateCetrek fluxgate compass (commonly used), wind vane (not availiable), GPS or computer navigation system. (Cetrek Software and hardware factory updated 1999).

Icom M80 VHF with mast mounted antenna, updated in 2000 with new coast guard channels.

Binnacle compass mounted at the wheel.

Entertainment: Alpine FM/AM CD with a Sony 300 watt X-plod amplifier and ADS PQ10 - 100 watt power amplifier.  The cabin includes two ADS 300i bulkhead mounted speakers and two Sony base speakers.  The cockpit is fitted with two large Pioneers marine speakers built in to the lazerette.  Also included is a small TV.

Electrical System:

The 12-volt system has been significantly up graded over the last 2 years. The boat is equipped with 4 banks of marine, deep-cycle flooded batteries totaling over 850 amp-hours of capacity. All banks are fused, isolated, contained and secured. The batteries are charged with either the 40-watt Statpower 110 volt, 3-bank, 4-cycle charger (with nav. station display) or the engine driven Motorola 75-watt alternator.

A new Statpower 1000 watt inverter supplies pure sine-wave 110 volt AC to a GIF outlet at the nav. station (computer and vacuum need this). Controls and display are at the nav. Station.

The 110-volt AC shore power system is controlled from a distribution/breaker box in the aft cabin with plugs forward and aft.

Fresh Water System:

Three fresh-water storage tanks, (port, starboard and forward) can be managed separately, (to balance hull weight), total about 160 gallons. Pressure hot and cold water through–out the boat.

Water may be heated in three ways:

1.     engine heat exchanger;

2.     12 gallon shore-power 110 volt hot water heater; or

3.     New Bosh W125 propane hot water heater.

All heating systems are connected in series so operation is automatic.

Both heads have shower capability; the plumbing in the aft head is most convenient.

The aft head is also equipped with new holding tank.

Deck and Hull:

The natural teak deck is laid on cored GRP coach roof. Topsides are in original condition. The bottom protective paint was stripped in 2000 and brought up with epoxy sealer and 3 coats of Petit APC ablative antifouling paint. (The reason for this was not blisters - rather, there was 10 years of layered bottom paint which needed to be removed). The keel is steel, fared and ablative protected.

Anchor: CQR 45# with 200 feet of new 5/8 HT chain, SS swivel, Lofrans electric windless, twin bow anchor rollers.

Sails and Rigging:

The UK fully-battened main is in excellent condition, 3 reef points, re-cut in 2000. The retractable lazy jacks make sail storage easy. The Stern Offshore roller furler usually handles the Elvstrom 146% genoa. The  Elvstrom 85% and Elvstrom storm jib are also on board.  A brightly colored Gennaker with sock is also included and is easily manageable for down wind runs.  A telescoping Isomat spinnaker pole is stowed at the front of the mast when not in use.  Five regular and three self-tailing Lewmar winches provide ample flexibility for sail handling. Most lines lead aft through new Spinlok controls at the cockpit. Sail control has been modernized so Greyhawk can easily sailed by the skipper alone. Colored coded halyards are all 5/8" yacht-braid and were renewed in 1999/2000.

Mechanical Equipment:

The Perkins 108 Diesel engine is in excellent condition, (2179 HR.) and drives the Flexfold 19x16 folding propeller through the Hurth gearbox, PYI flexable coupling and PYI shaft seal. The engine is controlled from the operating panel in the cockpit. Single lever forward/reverse and throttle are attached to the offshore Goiot wheel.

Performance:

This boat was designed to be sailed across oceans. Our experience in any weather (40 knots of wind, 10-foot seas) is that this German Frers designed yacht is fast, responsive and very safe. In light winds she moves easily and is well-balanced. In average wind conditions, she cruises at 7 to 8 knots. Under engine power the boat settles in at 7.5 knots with an engine speed of 2500 RPM.

History and Location of Vessel:

Built in France, the boat was shipped to Britain, where it was equipped with electronics and mechanical systems. The boat was then shipped to the west coast of the USA where it was moored in Seattle. We purchased her in 1997 and sailed it to its present home at the Point Roberts Marina, Washington State, USA. At the time of purchase, because the owners are Canadian, she was registered as a Canadian vessel and duties and GST were paid. The boat has always been scrupulously and professionally maintained. Greyhawk has never been chartered, rented or raced. Greyhawk receives an annual haul-out each spring for a bottom power-wash, new zincs, extra coat of ablative bottom paint, topsides wax and general underwater check. Engine and gearbox are also serviced annually. She was featured on the cover of the magazine Pacific Yachting of August 1998.

Owners Comments:

Greyhawk is our 3rd sailboat and we have plans for a 4th. She is a beautiful, safe and fast boat. Her performance, comfort and reliability have exceeded our expectation in every regard.
